Conflict is a part of life. However, we have to learn how to handle conflict in a healthy way. Here are some tips you can try with your child the next time they have a conflict with someone else. It’s completely normal to feel frustrated, sad, or even confused when things don’t go smoothly with others. No one gets along perfectly all the time, even kids.
When conflict comes up, it’s a great chance to teach:
- Respectful communication
- Repairing relationships
- Reassurance that it's ok to feel big feelings and learn to handle those feelings in a healthy way
Try this script at home the next time your child has a conflict, because when your child faces conflict, try offering reassurance first:
"I can see that really bothered you. That sounds hard.”
“It’s okay to feel upset. Let’s talk about what happened and figure out what might help.”
“It sounds like you were both frustrated. What could you say to solve the problem?”
Learning to solve conflicts helps kids feel more confident and connected.
Take care,
