Test Taking Tips

From the Principal's Desk

Welcome to this week's edition of the Comfort Elementary School Newsletter!

DID YOU KNOW?
How to support your child the night before a standardized test.

The night before a standardized test can be stressful for kids and parents. While you cannot take the test for your child, you can take steps to create a supportive environment to reduce anxiety and promote a positive mindset. Below, we offer strategies to help you empower your child and set the stage for a positive testing experience.

Building Confidence Before Testing

This month has been about reviewing calming tools and practicing confidence-building strategies. We are learning that mistakes help our brains grow and that one test does not define who we are.
Students created simple affirmations such as:
  • “I can do hard things.”
  • “I am prepared.”
  • “I will try my best.”

Non-tested grades are reviewing coping tools for everyday worries and big feelings.
 Parent Tips:

  • Write a short encouragement note for your child to read on testing morning and place it somewhere they can easily find it.

  • Keep mornings calm and predictable. Give them plenty of time to wake up and get ready - a rushed morning can increase stress and raise cortisol levels adding to more stress on a day where they already feel pressure.

  • Provide a balanced breakfast and plenty of sleep.

  • Remind your child: “You are more than a test score.”

Take care,
Mrs. Irvin
