Highlights of the CISD Board Meeting - June 8, 2026

Happy summer and welcome to our monthly School Board meeting newsletter! This edition brings you some highlights of the CISD School Board meeting that was held on June, 2026. Our goal is to keep you connected and informed each month.

Information Items

  • Superintendent, Dr. Yvonne Munoz reviewed information on the upcoming Summer Leadership Institute June 10th-13th where she and the School Board will be collaboratively presenting on Team of Eight. Dr. Munoz gave the Board an update on the Summer CTE grant.
  • Director of Academic Services, Dr. Boothe, reported to the Board on preliminary STAAR results and Map Growth with analytics and comparisons on CISD Spring academic data. With STAAR results, final performance levels and scale scores for 5th and 8th grade Science are scheduled for release in July.  STAAR strengths include 4th grade Reading, English I, 8th grade Social Studies, and all high school EOCs—especially noteworthy gains in Algebra I. Areas for growth include 3rd grade reading and middle school math. Texas English Language Proficiency Tests (TELPAS) results will be available in the coming weeks. MAP data shows CISD hit the 50th percentile among national norms indicating the district is in the middle of the average growth. Elementary math showed strong growth and achievement.
  • Health/Safety/Communications Coordinator, Emily Steffek, gave the Board an update on strategic planning with Teen Lifeline Collective, outlining Fall and Spring school-based rallies, coffee house parent/faculty chats, and the CISD annual 5K anti-bullying Run-Walk-Roll event. Mrs. Steffek indicated the growth in partnership with HCCADA to support DAEP students in need for the 2026-2027 school year. Safety remains top priority as drills and door sweeps continue along with the continuation of the district’s Guardian program. Mrs. Steffek recapped on the presentation she gave at Drug Free Comfort’s “Safer Communities, Healthier Lives” community event.
  • Comfort Elementary School Principal, Amy Ellis, gave an overview of enrollment being at 472 and the student attendance average being 94%. While summer school is in progress with 80 students in attendance, May concluded with daily events and activities to enrich students’ learning experiences and help build campus culture. Mrs. Ellis reviewed CES STAAR data and provided to the Board a detailed Recommended Plan of Action to support growth for all students, faculty, and staff.
  • Comfort Middle School Principal, Jolane Maddox, reported that CMS currently has and enrollment of 225 students and an average of 93% attendance. Focus remains on the Fundamental Five framework to improve instructional rigor, student engagement, and academic performance. Ms. Maddox reviewed CMS’ action plan to intervene for all students to have opportunity for growth in math and reading. May concluded the year with celebrations and continues into summer school with a strong focus on reading and math as teachers also attend individualized summer professional development.

  • Comfort High School Principal, Sarah Womble, gave an updated enrollment of 344, with 98 of those students being CHS’ most recent graduating class. CHS saw gains in EOC scores and continue to strive towards success with students attaining scholarships totaling over $120,000 from local community organizations. Mrs. Womble highlighted the accomplishments of student organizations such as FCCLA, which contributes back directly to the Comfort Community through opportunities with Comfort Food Pantry, Blessings in a Backpack, Comfort Games, and more. CHS’ new summer welding program began this June allowing students to earn their welding certifications and work on different projects. The FFA officer team and select group of students will be traveling to the Texas State FFA Convention in July. Band is busy this summer with drum majors attending leadership camp and rehearsals starting in July. MCJROTC completed its inaugural year focused on leadership development, discipline, citizenship, physical fitness, and community involvement.
  • Mary Garza gave a Food Service Report on summer meals and participation during summer school.
  • Comfort Athletics’ summer program continues to focus on strength development, speed training, conditioning, leadership, and athletic growth across all sports. Middle and High School boys and girls follow a summer workout schedule and participate in the various summer camps available.
  • Technology Director, Jennifer DiGiacinto updated the Board on the collection of student laptops, employee summer laptop refresh, and the opening of May registration for returning students. Technology prepared summer school devices for all three campuses. The new PA system is now fully implemented across all campuses as well.
  • McLemore reported on the summer strategic plan for deep cleaning and waxing and gave an outline of each team’s status at all three campuses. Safety meetings continue on a regular basis.
  • Director of Operations, Trent Wilson, reported on facilities and grounds work to include replacement of HVAC, inspection of all CISD structures, HVAC inspections, and storm response plans with roofing and AC damage. The Operations team continues to respond to any reported door issues for security, and they continue to address all transportation needs with buses and district equipment.

The School Board approved the recommendation to approve the audit engagement letter submitted by the Armstrong, Vaughan and Assoc. accounting firm as presented.

The School Board approved the Optional Flexible School Day Program (OFSDP) as presented.

The School Board approved the adoption of Prevailing Wage Davis-Bacon rates for applicable district construction and improvement projects as presented.

The School Board approved not to nominate a trustee from the Board for the Region 20, Position A seat on the TASB Board and to endorse Ginger Friesenhahn.

The School Board called the 2026 General Trustee Election to be held on November 3, 2026 for Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7.

The School Board changed the title of the Health/Safety/Communications Coordinator to the Director of Health/Safety/Communications as presented.

The School Board selected Competitive Sealed Proposals as the delivery method for construction services for the construction projects Renovate Altgelt Field, Renovate Baseball and Softball Fields, Renovate Tennis Courts, Football Stadium Turf, Replace Track, Replace Lighting, Reseal and Restripe High school Parking Lot, Reseal and Restripe Back Parking Lot and Elementary School as presented.

The School Board adopted the 2026-2027 Compensation Plan as presented.
